A Human Requiem (satb choir with solo mezzo-soprano)

by Vaughan McAlley (2019)

Work Overview

One of the many things I like about A German Requiem by Brahms is the words that Brahms himself selected from the scriptures. A Human Requiem is an a cappella choral setting of these powerful words, and is a large-scale piece that addresses human themes of sorrow, renewal, fragility, fear, futility, consolation, anxiety, triumph, peace, hope, and joy.

Contribute submitted styles, genres, influences, etc:

A Human Requiem is a sort of culmination of my personal style, which is a contrapuntal style that extends the ideas of 16th century polyphony in a way that incorporates 400 years of intervening musical history. There are musical references to Tomás Luis de Victoria, Josquin Desprez, Gregorian chant, John Sheppard, Charles Stanford, Heinrich Schütz, Vaughan McAlley, and of course, Brahms himself.
