"προχωρώ" (to proceed, progress, move on, advance) is a Greek word, used to convey movement specifically in a forward direction. This work is both a personal and societal expression of the nature of forward-motion.
Through growth and embrace of my authentic self, I gained happiness, confidence, and individuality. However, this progression was not without a cost-faith, identity, dignity and much more. This great loss comes with an ongoing state of mourning, and a lifelong journey of acceptance.
The exploration of προχωρώ not only has a strong personal connection, but also a much broader one. As the world moves forward in time and society, we as a civilisation gain so much. However, there are also things that must be left behind. Regardless of what our stories are, we all experience προχωρώ, be it advancing in life, moving on from a tragedy, or proceeding with a major decision. In every instance, there exists a polarity: what is gained, and what must be left behind. I hope any performer or listener can find pieces of their own story within the work.
I. What is Gained
The first movement of the
work is an exploration of the receptive nature of forward-
motion. With progression forward, one gains momentum, uplift,
clarity, pause and revitalisation.
II. What Must Be Left Behind
The second movement is both a lament and a rebirth - reflection
upon what has been lost through motion forward, but also what may
be washed away. From this, the movement becomes a meditation upon
a new state of being, judgement and pain left behind.
