Work Overview

Earth to Air, Tolling of the Bells represents the idea of connection between ourselves and the environment; the human element set against and the natural world. The earth is represented in the grounded chords in the piano and the air by the shakuhachi-tones of the flute. Dissonances are softened into amorphous clouds by extensive use of the sustain pedal, resolving into sweet-sounding melody. The tolling of the bells, heard in the piano, represents grief at the destructive impact of humans on the health of our planet. The piece also explores the idea of ancient versus modern in the juxtaposition of shakuhachi-like sounds with the contemporary sounds of the metal flute.
