Work Overview

All sounds used in Violins in Space were generated using a violin and then treated in STREAM and SPACE_N [programs that comprise an integral part of Ian Fredericks' IANSMUSE software suite]. Violins in Space was
originally designed as a demonstration piece (study) in using the [two aforenamed] programs ... The piece as designed to use the real-time software version of SPACE_N in a real-time performance piece with a live violin
player and a studio-prepared multi-channel part played directly off a computer with eighteen discrete channels decoding to thirty-six channels using nine Dolby Pro-Logic decoders. The piece does not require the services of a skilled violinist as such, and is designed more to be within the capabilities of a performance-artist (at the time of writing the player I had in mind was myself - I am not a violinist). [Here, Ian Fredericks himself is eliciting sounds from a violin that belonged to his [grand]father Clarie.] {Ian Fredericks}
