Work Overview
Commissioned as part of the Residentie Orkest's One Minute Symphony program, Gegenpress draws inspiration from The Hague's deep-rooted football culture. Just as the Residentie Orkest has been a defining cultural force in the city since the early 1900s, football remains an equally vital aspect of its identity. Taking its name from the high-intensity tactical approach in football, Gegenpress mirrors the relentless energy, rapid transitions, and explosive dynamism of the game. As both a musician and a football enthusiast, I was particularly interested in the intersection of these worlds. In developing this piece, I engaged in discussions with Herman Kooijenga, a coach from SVV Scheveningen, exploring how football and music shape The Hague's cultural landscape, and their shared intensity and artistry.
