Work Overview

Unravelling is loosely inspired by the ecological system of the Murray-Darling Basin, where periods of lush, vibrant wet seasons are followed by quiet, still dry periods. It's a delicate balance where just the right amount of wet and dry is needed for the flora and fauna to flourish. As is often the case, this balance is threatened by human intervention: over-allocation of water, pollution and algal blooms, climate change, invasive species… the list goes on.

Unravelling musically explores the wet and dry seasons, with each passing season becoming progressively more unstable and more "polluted." Melodic lines are drawn from bird species unique to the Murray-Darling Basin such as the Bunyip bird, Eastern Curlew, Eastern Regent Parrot and the Painted Snipe. Their calls appear in both the wet and dry seasons, becoming increasingly distorted as the piece unfolds.

Although initially inspired and structured around the vibrant ecosystem of the Murray-Darling Basin, Unravelling has grown into a broader commentary on the state of our natural world and how it is valued in greater society. Personally I feel we are running out of time to address the challenges it faces and more and more our environment is becoming an afterthought. I often like to share messages of hope in my music, that there is still time to act, but more and more I find myself questioning whether we will ever truly value our natural world enough to save it or whether it will continue to unravel until there is nothing left to save.
