THREE BIRDS : for mezzo-soprano and cello / music by Kate Reid ; words by Judith Wright.
Library shelf no. 783.67542/REI 3 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
In all three songs the voice and cello interact conversationally, speaking and responding with equal importance. The songs can be performed individually or together as a set of three. All tempo markings are approximate. In free sections accidentals apply only to the notehead they immediately precede.
In Black- shouldered Kite and Magpies, I have removed bar lines and rests when the voice and cello exchange gestural material. This is to enable performers to choose what feels right for them and allow space without losing momentum. They will not be constricted by trying to "keep time", rather, they will be able to listen to each other and engage in a more freely flowing dialogue.
