Work Overview
With Jennifer Marten-Smith and Zachary and Reuben Allen as hoped for performers,I wanted to compose a work in response to the Tarkine area of N.W. Tasmania I am familiar with from my early years living in Smithton, my home town. I've endeavoured to begin by referring to the wild Tarkine coast, where the seas exposed to the "roaring forties", unimpeded all the way from South Africa are usually ferociously turbulent.
I shift the focus inland to the still extensive largely virgin forest, dense and undisturbed. I imagined myself standing in one spot allowing visual textural patterns and bird calls to randomly vie for attention all building up to an overwhelming emotional response reaching a climax quite late in the 12 minute one movement piece culminating in four unrelated major triads firmly played by the piano, marked con alterezza. The conclusion is quiet and relaxed.
