Work

Joyful Noel : for SATB choir and piano

by Rachel Hocking (2024)

Work Overview

Joyful Noel is a vibrant and expressive choral work that captures the spirit of the Christmas season. Written in mixolydian mode, it features bell-like brightness and rhythmical energy that gives the piece a celebratory character. The music and words explore themes of humility within the nativity story, through devices such as call and response, with verses shaped by questions and answers. The opening sections use sustained textures to evoke a misty, atmospheric character, referencing echoes of the past. This gradually shifts towards a radiant final verse, where the sound becomes grounded in the present and filled with joy.
