Work Overview
The Poem and the Poet is inspired by Miriam Wei Wei Lo's poem 'Who Comes Calling?'-a whimsical yet deeply honest reflection on motherhood, creativity and the persistent nature of artistic calling. With humour and compassion, the poem captures the tension between caring for a family and pursuing the often-elusive work of making art.
Its themes resonated deeply with me. Like Miriam, I have often questioned whether composing serves any practical purpose, or whether my time would be better spent elsewhere. Yet creative callings have a remarkable way of returning, quietly but insistently, refusing to be ignored.
Finding the opening ideas for this cello duet mirrored the poem's own imagery: inspiration seemed to have slipped away "between the stars". Once discovered, however, the music became an engaging and joyful companion.
Although the work loosely follows sonata form, its purpose is expressive rather than formal, tracing the playfulness, frustration, melancholy and quiet triumph of bringing something new into being. I am deeply grateful to Miriam for her inspiring poem, and to Luce Duet for inviting me to write this work and begin this rewarding musical journey.
