Work Overview
To punch above your weight, Punch and Judy, punch in the nose, pack a punch, drink some punch...'
Punch lives up to its name: short, muscular and deliberately impactful, balancing rhythmic precision with bold textures. It is the sister piece to Fanfare for the Melancholy, and where that work explores the reflective, this one explores the kinetic. At 2 minutes 20 seconds, it is often performed as a concert opener or encore piece.
Commissioned by Don Immel for the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Brass Ensemble. Premiered at the Sydney International Festival of Brass in 2013, followed by a tour to China.
