Product details
Calling a piece a 'Sonata' in this day & age opens it up to so much comparison & pre-defined thinking that I hesitated to name it such, even though it seemed sensible, as there was no extra-musical impetus to its creation.
The first movement exhibits the "sonata structure" but its two themes, though contrasted, stem from the same rhythmic cell. The second movement is basically a song or cantilena and uses some of the darker qualities of the flute's lower register when the guitar introduces its central theme. The last movement, as was common with many sonatas, is in "rondo form" but the subject is in 7/8 giving it a slightly ungainly folk-like feel especially in its last minute 'key changes' at the end.
