Product details

Mysterious Flowers was written in 1990. The first movement is based on an earlier idea intended for an ensemble piece to mark Peter Sculthorpe's fiftieth birthday, and is dedicated to Peter. It is based on a tone row, but its harmonic language may disguise this fact somewhat. The second movement, dedicated to Ross Edwards, is also based on an earlier idea. The high arpeggiated chordal idea is a mutation of the call of the magpie lark which the composer had noted down some time before. The third movement, dedicated to Lucinda Edwards, 'appeared' during an improvisation at the piano, when the piece 'materialised' from the tones of Messiaen's second mode of limited transposition (also known in Jazz theory as the diminished scale).
