Product details

Crumbles: Fluted is a piece written for flugelhorn and acoustic guitar for the Australian Music Centre's "Momentum: Composing Lutruwita" commission.

This piece is based on a rhythmic approach I have been developing for a few years now called "Crumbles". To date I believe this approach has been primarily influenced and shaped by the unique natural environment surrounding my home and studio on Bruny Island where I have lived all my life. In particular, the many cycles and rhythms present in the land and sea, both audible and ecological. The way these rhythms interact and phase against each other to create undulating beds of rhythmic and melodic activity that lie outside traditional metric grids has always fascinated me.

Crumbles started off as a textural exploration within which I discovered opportunities for a more structured and thorough approach to making flowing rhythmic sounds. I hear them as spheres of pointillism, cycles and clusters of notes constantly breaking and rebuilding, creating an organic pulse that is dictated by physical impulses born of extended time spent in nature.

Having said all this, Crumbling is still very much something primarily felt, a mode of playing that still surprises me and lies outside of my total control.

At times Scott and I have ended up in this rhythmic world within our duo improvisations and I thought for this commission it would be interesting to explore this further using Fluted Cape as a creative spring board. It also felt important to not impede too much on our shared language as a duo, merely provide some ideas and imagery for us to take flight.

An excerpt from my notes may help explain the sounds when listening: A liquid togetherness with unison-esque phrases interjecting a stretched out crumble aesthetic. Emphasis on zooming in on the crumble sound, stretching it out and shining light on the textures of each note. Less about density. More boulders, solidity and time. No urgency. Dynamic yet stable. Eagles on top. Cape staying put.
