Product details
A Children's Hymn is a song for two voices and piano that sets a poem by Adam Stokeld. The poem is a beautiful offering of optimism and hope and that kind of childlike innonence that always uplifts us poor reality-stricken adults.
Taking the idea of this text being a secular hymn, the song starts with a strong nod to four-part chorale music associated with sacred and hymnal music. Beginning with bittersweet harmonies and melodies, the chorale develops into more florid and intricate parts as the song becomes more overtly optimistic and joyous, with bright harmonies in a now more textural, chordal, and rhythmic piano part. Both voice parts have moments to shine on their own, as well as moments of duets, interplay, and canon.
A special thank you to Adam Stokeld who, at the invitiation of Felicity Woodhill from Inspire Music Australia, seemed to whisk together a perfect and inspiring text at the drop of a hat, and for his openness to letting me set this text with such freedom.
