Olev Muska is an Australian-born composer, performer and multidisciplinary artist of Estonian and Russian heritage whose career spans more than five decades of creative innovation. Working across music composition and production, sound design, live performance, fine art, graphic design, illustration, photography, filmmaking, publishing and poetry, he has also made significant contributions to community cultural development through creative programs for local government, libraries, universities, youth organisations and the disability sector.
Largely self-taught, Muska has built an extensive body of musical work that is almost entirely self-composed, produced, performed, published and promoted. His work charts the evolution of electronic music itself across formats ranging from reel-to-reel tape, to modular analog synths to digital media. Although only a fraction has been commercially released through his Estoterix label, founded in 1980, and a small number of independent labels, he continues to catalogue more than 50 years of creative output.
Widely regarded as the father of Estonian ethnotronica, Muska pioneered the fusion of traditional Estonian folk music with electronic production. His debut single Tuljak (1980), produced in Australia, is recognised as the first Estonian folktronica release, while the Australia Council-funded album Old Estonian Waltzes (1985) is considered the first Estonian electronic dance music album.
Whether composing entirely from scratch, working from traditional sources or reinterpreting the arrangements of composers such as Veljo Tormis, he transforms familiar melodies into vibrant contemporary soundscapes while preserving the spirit of the original music. His distinctive approach balances innovation with deep respect for cultural heritage. It's nostalgia spiked with voltage - tradition filtered through decades of circuit-bending, tape hiss, and outsider futurism.
Muska's reputation has grown through acclaimed recordings and live performances, earning him cult status in Estonia. During 2025 he completed an extensive Baltic tour of more than 20 performances, including solo audio-visual shows and major festivals - an unprecedented achievement for a visiting diaspora artist.
In October 2025, Muska received a recognition award and grant from Estonia's Musical Arts Endowment Fund and the Estonian Music Council for his outstanding contribution to Estonian music. He later undertook a five-week visit across Estonia at the invitation of the Finno-Ugric Society, presenting performances celebrating the music of the indigenous Balto-Finnic peoples. The trip included appearances at Tallinn Music Week and other concerts, collaborations, academic engagements and media interviews.
His recent vinyl and digital releases, New Estonian Waltzes and My Mouth Sang, My Heart Sank, issued by Estonia's Glitch Please label, coincided with his 2025 and 2026 tours.
Reflecting on Muska's performance at Hall Tallinn, British composer and journalist Simon Cummings noted that "Muska could hardly be more all over the source material, embellishing it, ramping it up, festooning it with intricate beat patterns, leaping and squelching basslines, multiple strata of jostling pulse configurations, and exultant melodic refrains … the source material is always there, front and centre, fragmented, refracted, pumped up and electrified - often like being caught in the midst of an antique video game - but in a fibrillating soundworld that exists solely to celebrate what it is."
