Born in Australia and now based in the UK, Lisa Illean composes 'music that seeps into your consciousness' (ABC Classic FM). Reflective and compelling, her 'exquisitely quiet shadows' (The Sydney Morning Herald) invite contemplation, often exploring unconventional tunings and the phenomena that arise through the interaction of quiet layers.

Illean has written widely across genres. An acre ringing, still, for orchestra and electronics, was hailed as 'fascinating…intrinsically beautiful but uniquely challenging'. Commissioned and premiered by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Ryan Wigglesworth, it received its German premiere with WDR Symphonieorchester and Elena Schwarz at the 2025 Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik: "Ein stilles und edles Stück, kein Ausrufezeichen, eher ein Gedankenstrich, der lange nachklingt" (NMZ).

Recent chamber works include Tiding for solo electric guitar, which has been performed as widely as New York (Time:Spans festival), London, Witten, Mälmo, Berlin, Florence, Chicago, and Melbourne, and is the first in a series of works for varied instrumentations and electronics. Tiding II was created through a residency with the Experimentalstudio des SWR and commissioned by SWR for Donaueschingen Musiktage (2021), while Tiding III was commissioned by Festival d'Automne and Ensemble NIKEL with support from the Ernst von Siemens foundation and first performed at IRCAM Centre-Pompidou in October 2025. Other recent projects include Swellsong for Genevieve Lacey and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, which makes its UK debut at the 2026 Aldeburgh Festival, and Sonata in ten parts for Cédric Tiberghien, which premiered at Wigmore Hall.

She has maintained strong connections with her birth country, with commissions from Finding Our Voice/ Ukaria Cultural Centre and Sydney Symphony Orchestra, as well as projects with Adelaide and Melbourne Symphony orchestras, and the Australian National Academy of Music. In 2025, Raewyn Hill choreographed her arrangements of Gilles' Binchois for IN THE SHADOW OF TIME, a collaboration with Australian Chamber Orchestra and Co3 dance company, which toured Australia and Japan.

Her works have also been commissioned by Ensemble intercontemporain, Radio France's Festival Présences, Donaueschinger Musiktage/Experimental Studio des SWR, Britten Sinfonia, and the BBC Proms. In recent years she has oriented her practice as a composer to include making long-form pieces with both performed and pre-recorded material, in close development with one or two others. Her work is published by Faber Music.

Illean offers us glimpses, moments, shapes, hues, and, ultimately a sense of stillness…an intimate atmosphere that is an once calming and disquieting.

BBC Music Magazine (Michael Beek) September 2024

Illean conjures an air of precarious beauty from her lightly woven fabric of filaments and intimations

The Wire September 2024

…one of those composers who can open up a space with just a few notes, her sensitive music entices us to pay careful attention to the sounds she chooses… As an experience, it's somehow like stepping into a minimalist art gallery, as the sole viewer, walking around and pausing to observe every part of an artwork, letting each look reveal something new.

Limelight (Rebecca Franks) 8 August 2024 ★★★★1/2

Illean's is a distinctive and original new voice in the landscape and her work was realised here by the SSO with tender care
