Dr Fred Cole is a composer whose work is driven by an improvisational approach, drawing on visual imagery and dance-based ideas as the starting point for original composition. Rather than beginning from purely abstract or formal musical material, Cole treats a striking image, a gesture, or a movement pattern as a generative seed, allowing the music to unfold through a process of spontaneous exploration before it is refined and shaped into its final form. This working method has become the defining thread across his output, lending his music a sense of immediacy and physicality even where the finished scores are carefully structured.
Cole holds a PhD in Music Composition from Southern Cross University, where his doctoral research examined the relationship between improvisation and compositional process - an inquiry that continues to inform his creative practice. His works have been released on CD and are available across all major streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music, reaching audiences well beyond the concert hall.
Among the works Cole considers most representative of his style is I Dreamt of Things Impossible, a piece that exemplifies his interest in using image-driven ideas as a springboard for musical invention, allowing the fantastical and the impossible to shape both form and gesture. The work was named a finalist for the Award for Excellence in a Regional Area at the 2022 Art Music Awards. Also representative is Cars That Ate Paris, in which movement and narrative imagery are translated into musical texture and momentum, reflecting Cole's ongoing fascination with the interplay between visual stimulus and sound.
Across his catalogue, Cole resists a fixed or singular style, preferring instead to let each new work grow organically from its originating image or movement idea. This has resulted in a body of work characterised by variety and responsiveness, unified less by a consistent musical language than by a consistent creative process. For Cole, composition is less a matter of imposing predetermined structure than of following an idea - visual, kinetic, or narrative - and allowing the music to discover its own shape along the way.
Cole continues to compose new work, making his music available to a wide public through streaming and recorded formats.
